NMC includes sustainable healthcare in midwifery curriculum

Newly qualified midwives will now be required to know about sustainable healthcare. The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) has included sustainable healthcare in its new Standards of Proficiency for Midwives, published last month.

Under Domain 5,  Promoting excellence: the midwife as colleague, scholar and leader, Outcome 5.10 requires that, at the point of registration, the midwife will be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the principles and methods of sustainable health care.

The updated Standards were informed by the NMC Future Midwife consultation earlier this year, to which we submitted a response on behalf of this Network, calling for sustainable healthcare to be included. So it is very exciting to see that this has been picked up!

It would be great to hear from anyone involved in midwifery education and to think about how we could support the implementation of the new Outcome.
