🎤 Speaker: Prof Peter Stenvinkel – Prof & Senior Lecturer at the Dept of Renal Medicine, Karolinska University Hospital, Karolinska Institutet
Peter Stenvinkel is Professor and Senior Lecturer at the Department of Renal Medicine, Karolinska University Hospital, Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden. He has published ≈730 original papers and reviews, as well as >50 book chapters on various aspects of inflammation, wasting, and metabolism in patients with chronic kidney disease. His Hirsch index is 139, and his work has been cited >78,500 times.
He has delivered >600 invited lectures at international meetings and congresses across approximately 30 countries. Among his distinctions, he received the award for the best Swedish thesis in diabetology in 1994 and the Baxter Extramural Grant in 1996. He was awarded the Karolina Prize in 2005, the Vizenca Prize in 2009, and the Addis Gold Medal by the ISRNM for nutritional research in 2010. In 2012 National Kidney Foundation international awardee in Washington DC. He received the ERA-EDTA prize for outstanding educational activities in European nephrology. In november 2025 he received the European Award in Medicine in Rome. In january 2026 received an honorary doctorate Maastricht University.
Peter Stenvinkel has served as a council member of the International Society of Nephrology (since 2007) and of the ERA-EDTA (2007–2010). He is an Editor of the Journal of Internal Medicine and served as Editor-in-Chief of NDT-E from 2010 to 2013. He was named an honorary member of the Australian and New Zealand Society of Nephrology in 2010 and of the Polish Society of Nephrology in 2012. In 2012, he received the International NKF Award.
In 2020, Stanford University identified him as the world’s 13th most influential nephrologist. He is a Fellow of both ERA-EDTA and ASN, and since 2022, he has been a Guest Professor at Maastricht University. He served as Local President of the ERA Congress in Stockholm in 2024 and hosted the 19th Key Meeting on Planetary Health at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in May 2025. He is the President of the Swedish Society of Nephrology 2025. In 2025, he published the popular science book ”Learning from Nature – The Power of Biological Intelligence”.
