Adopting Greener Practice in Endoscopy

This case study was completed as part of the Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Gloucester Managed Services Green Team Competition from September 2022 to January 2023.

Team Members: Dr. Luke Materacki, Consultant Gastroenterologist and Lucy Breach, Endoscopy Sister

Setting/Patient Group: Trust-Wide

Issue to be Addressed:

Reducing carbon emissions and waste in endoscopy, addressing the environmental impact of a high-throughput medical procedure.

Interventions:

Pre-endoscopy:

  • Offer electronic pre-procedure booklets via email to reduce paper use.

During endoscopic procedures:

  • Replace single-use shorts with washable gowns.
  • Target reduction in prophylactic inkopad use.

Post-procedure:

  • Encourage patients to bring reusable cups or water bottles to reduce single-use cup waste.

Outcome:

Clinical: Improved procedural efficiency and perceived patient benefits.

Social: Positive staff attitudes and patient feedback regarding changes.

Environmental: Estimated annual carbon emissions savings of 6,619 kgCO2e.

Economic: Estimated annual cost savings of £9,568.

Key Learning Point:

The implementation of sustainable practices in endoscopy not only positively impacts the environment and finances but also enhances patient care, choice, and staff engagement. Establishing a green endoscopy working group and continuous efforts are vital for lasting change.
