Design for life - Bronchoscopes

Rachel McLean
Rachel McLean • 1 May 2025

This report outlines the current practice of bronchoscopes use in Cambridge as well as impacts of using reusable bronchoscopes in comparison to single-use scopes. It also includes learning on considerations for use of single use versus reusable ureteroscopes and cystoscopes.

This report forms part of a larger project led by CSH and the Design for Life team, who in collaboration with key partners, is working with sites in the NHS to explore the potential for switching from single-use to reusable  products. This initiative aims to identify barriers, opportunities, and the benefits of such a transition, focusing on sustainability, cost savings, and improving healthcare efficiency. By quantifying these benefits, the project supports the NHS's broader goal of reducing waste and promoting a circular economy in medical technologies.
