Net zero care: what will it take?

By 2040 and 2045, the National Health Service (NHS) wants to achieve net zero emissions, accounting for 40% of public sector emissions and 4% of England's carbon footprint. To accomplish this, the Greener NHS initiative calls for action in the areas of supply chains, energy, and estates. To achieve net zero, care delivery must contribute to greenhouse gas emissions. Preventing illness, enhancing disease management, transferring treatment outside of hospitals, cutting waste, and utilising lower-carbon substitutes are important strategies for decarbonising healthcare. Supporting employees, emphasising environmental sustainability, coordinating national policy, and encouraging innovation and research are some of the actions to be taken.
