Intended Learning Outcome: To provide an overview of the background and current thinking regarding sustainability and oral health and efforts to promote it.
Speaker: Dr Jenny Girdler
About the speaker: Jenny is taking a year out of Oral Surgery dental specialty training to undertake a fellowship with Health Education England and the Centre for Sustainable Healthcare to focus on making dentistry more sustainable. Jenny has successfully delivered teaching and quality improvement initiatives to embed sustainability into medical and dental training programmes
Speaker: Dr Brett Duane
About the speaker: Brett Duane graduated from the University of Otago, New Zealand with a degree in dentistry. He has a Masters in Management in health management, a Masters in Public Health and a PhD in Dentistry. From 2001-2005, he worked as Senior Dental Officer in an Aboriginal health service. In 2006-2010 he was Assistant Clinical Director (Oral Health Improvement), Scotland. He is currently Associate Professor in Dental Public Health, at Trinity College, Dublin. His main interests and research are the delivery of cost-effective high quality oral health services, inequities in oral health, the oral health of the more vulnerable and ensuring that the delivery of oral health services are environmentally sustainable. He collaborates with the Centre for Sustainable Health Care, has published 36 papers on sustainable healthcare, and 6 book chapters. He has presented at around 12 international/UK conferences and collaborates/works with researchers across the UK, Denmark, Sweden, Canada, Australia, Spain and Turkey.
