January offers staff at UCLH and Dartford & Gravesham NHS Trusts the chance to welcome in the New Year by developing greener approaches to the work of their ward/unit. Green Ward Competitions were launched on Monday 4th Jan and staff have until 18th January to draw together a team of colleagues and sign up. With support of CSH clinical staff, teams will develop their own approaches to resource efficient and greener healthcare and in doing so will assist Trusts in reducing their carbon footprint.
Last year at UCLH NHS Trust teams planned and ran a wide range of projects including improved hydration to help prevent renal complications, improved waste management on ITU and a redesign of the ordering system on paediatrics to radically reduce wasted food supplements and enteral feeding prescriptions. Rajnika Patel, sustainable development manager, said 'Sustainable healthcare is preventative, patient-centred, efficient and low carbon. This competition made it fun for colleagues to work together on something they have wanted to tackle for a while and were given the push by the Green Wards competition to take action.’
At Dartford and Gravesham NHS Trust, supporting clinical staff to develop low carbon approaches to clinical practice is seen as a vital part of a systemic and impressive approach to carbon reduction. The Green Ward Competition sits alongside the Trust’s new Combined Heat and Power plant launched last month, a lighting upgrade and renewable energy work.
