The UK’s leading environmental and development groups have been joined by the IKEA Group, the National Trust, Unilever and the Women’s Institute in calling on David Cameron to speak out at the UN Climate Summit in New York next Tuesday.
In a full page advert in the Times and Telegraph newspapers on 16th September 2014, the Climate Coalition, which brings together over 100 organisations with a combined supporter base of 11 million people, calls on the Prime Minister to “take the lead at the Summit and drive forward the bold action needed to protect the things we love” from the impacts of climate change.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has invited world leaders, from government, finance, business, and civil society to Climate Summit 2014 in New York next Tuesday (23) to ensure that they can achieve a meaningful global agreement in 2015 that will tackle dangerous climate change. Prime Minister David Cameron confirmed last week that he will be attending.
Ban Ki-moon has asked world leaders to bring bold announcements and actions to the Summit that will reduce emissions, strengthen climate resilience, and mobilise political will before key negotiations that will lead to an international legal agreement in 2015.
Prof Sue Atkinson CBE, Co-Chair of the Climate and Health Council said: "Climate change is the most important and urgent public health priority. Multiple benefits will be accrued to both health and climate change by adopting more active sustainable life styles. Working together, health professionals and decision makers can promote healthier, more environmentally friendly societies. We ask the climate leaders, meeting at the summit in New York, to recognise the importance and urgency of climate change and health and the co-benefits that can be achieved by addressing both together"
On Sunday 21 September, people across the world will take part in the People’s Climate March, expected to be the largest global climate demonstration in history to inspire the world’s leaders to take ambitious action to tackle dangerous climate change.
