Dear Colleagues,
The Health Technology Assessment International (HTAi) Environmental Sustainability in HTA (ESHTA) Working Group, Workstream One is delighted to contact you about a Delphi study HTAi ESHTA is conducting to support the development of the Definition of Environmental Sustainability in Health Technology Assessment. This research is a structured expert consultation process that builds on the ESHTA objectives, published in September 2025: Toward including environmental sustainability in Health Technology Assessment - PubMed. HTAi is a non for profit organisation and none of the ESHTA research has been sponsored. In addition, the Delphi study has not been funded. HTAi is a professional society with an international community of members including academics, public & private organisations, health professionals, students, patients, and citizens. HTA, is a multidisciplinary process that uses explicit methods to determine the value of a health technology at different points in its lifecycle. The purpose is to inform decision-making in order to promote an equitable, efficient, and high-quality health system.
We are cordially inviting you to be part of this landmark research.
Before the Delphi rounds begin, we kindly ask all potential participants to complete a pre-survey questionnaire. The purpose of this pre-survey is to ensure that the perspectives represented in the Delphi process are both diverse and relevant to the study’s aims. Access to the presurvey link below will be available until Friday 27th February 6pm CET.
If you decide to participate, there will likely be three rounds of online surveys, emailed to you between March and November 2026. Please access the link below to the Delphi study pre-survey questionnaire:

Please also consider sharing the link above with your colleagues who may be willing to be part of the Delphi study. We will also be sharing a QR code and the link on LinkedIn. In particular, we are seeking participants to be involved (of course from all perspectives involved in health technology assessment and healthcare decision making) from lower and middle resource settings and people who work all over the world in policy, regulation, climate, ecology, environmental economics, environmental science, healthcare, and sustainable healthcare.
ESHTA anticipates the output of this work will include a peer reviewed academic paper and publication of the definition of environmental sustainability in HTA in the HTAi glossary.
Many thanks in anticipation of your support.
With best wishes
Mel, Jani, Anke, Matthias, Holly, Carla
