Ideas for future sharing hours?

Jennifer Nixon
Jennifer Nixon • 2 July 2023

Thank you to everyone who joined our first sharing hour on Wednesday. We had a great overview of sustainable respiratory care from Dr LJ Smith, followed by some thought-provoking questions and discussion, and I certainly learnt a lot!

We also invited suggestions for themes of future sharing hours. Suggestions so far include:

  • air pollution
  • inhaler recycling/disposal
  • reducing single use materials in procedures
  • examples of successful projects
  • resources for staff and patients

We’d love to hear suggestions from as many people as possible, so if you couldn’t attend but have an idea for a topic for a future session, please let us know in the comments below?

And if having a future session at a different time of day would enable you to attend, please let us know what time would be best (so far a lunchtime session is the front-runner)?

We look forward to hopefully meeting more of you at the next session.

I have been working with NW Glasgow- Primary Care supporting clusters and practice's who want to be involved with greener respiratory care. I developed an audit tool initially for one cluster, the practice nurses use this during an asthma/COPD review. Due to the clusters success a further cluster and stand alone practice are keen to progress this and I have set up similar audit tool for their practices. I would be keen to hear from anyone who has or in process of developing similar.

Would really like to get some hints and tips of how to get the messages across to primary care. In my experience a lot of the switch work could be done at asthma / copd reviews so that it doesn't add to the already huge workload but it's how to make practice nurses aware of greener respiratory care and get them on board.

Hi Laura-Jane. Love the greener practice toolkit! And very luckily have a GP from this network who does a session a week within my team :) Ideally was looking for groups / networks or ways to reach practice nurses so that we can spread the greener practice toolkit further. I've spoken to a few nurses doing asthma reviews within my region and this isn't on their radar... how to get it out?

In my role I link in with the NW Glasgow Primary Care teams. I held a virtual session on the topic for Primary Care staff to join and learn about GRC. From this I developed an audit tool and influenced a cluster to take this forward as their QIP. This work is incorporated in the Practice nurses asthma COPC review.
Due to its success I have showcased at various opportunities. CQL meetings, etc. From showcasing the work it has gained interest, I have another cluster starting on this work as well as a practice. Hearing from peers is useful, I have a wordle of comments from P/N who have used the audit tool. I was asked to submit a summary of the work for the CMO report which was can be found on page 47 ,
https://www.gov.scot/publications/realistic-medicine-doing-right-thing-…
I hope I can build on the momentum supporting other practice who would like to consider taking this forward in my locality.

Hi Laura- Jane
Thanks for the link, yes I have looked at the Greener Practice Asthma Toolkit. It's a good resource. The area I have looked at is developing an audit tool for each practice and collectively the cluster. The P/N can easily and quickly add data which collates information on each person at their asthma review and produce a report of the data for the cluster QIP. I would be keen to know if something similar is being developed elsewhere.
If you are free to discuss further my email is sandra.barber@ggc.scot.nhs.uk

Hi Sandra, thank you for your comments and the link to the publication, this sounds like a great piece of work, I will message you about the possibility of presenting this at a future sharing hour, if you would be interested. Thank you!

Hi Jennifer NuGreen have some great data on supporting decarbonisation of clinical pathways, procurement support, waste segregation and potential NHS change campaigns to reduce costs and carbon. We would be happy to share our info to support this. Clare

Sounds interesting. Are they working with any NHS partners that we could showcase as examples of applying circular economy principles?

Hi Laura yes we have been working across three different sites and are set to work with quite a few trusts across the uk so we could share the data trends and circular ideas. We are also doing a research project funded through Innovate UK to create low carbon construction materials from healthcare waste.
