KitNewCare in Action: Exploring Sustainable Change at UNIMORE Hospital, Modena

In November, myself and Frances Mortimer had the opportunity to visit one of our KitNewCare pilot sites, UNIMORE Hospital in Modena Italy. Our aim for the visit was to spend time with the team, discuss the sustainable changes they are implementing as part of the project, and plan for future work.

The visit was both productive and energising. UNIMORE has expanded the multidisciplinary team involved in KitNewCare, welcoming Rita, a nurse bringing valuable insight, and Giuseppe, a PhD student who is taking an active role in the project and supporting the work being carried out. Their combined perspectives are already helping to drive momentum in the project activities. It was also great to spend time again with Gabriele, Giulia, and Gaetano, who have been key to advancing sustainability at their site.

The team has been leading ongoing work within the nephrology department around waste, auditing current practices, observing day-to-day workflows, and holding meetings with the nurses to identify where meaningful changes can be made. Their commitment to understanding the root causes of waste and their collaborative approach was clear throughout our discussions.

We also spent time planning the next steps to implement and embed the changes already underway, ensuring they become a sustainable part of everyday practice. In addition, we discussed future opportunities for improvement beyond waste, targeting local hotspots such as patient pathways, transport, and food. Finally, we considered how successful approaches could be shared and adapted in other departments or hospitals within the project.

We left feeling encouraged by the progress made and excited to see how these efforts will continue to grow and make a difference.
