Following our inspiring and fun trip to Utrecht in June, Lucy (Clinical Delivery Lead), Hattie (Work Package 3 Project Manager) and Aycan (Work Package 5 Project Manager) headed to our next destination – Modena in Italy to visit the team at Università degli studi di Modena e Reggio Emilia (UNIMORE) Hospital.

On day one of our trip, we were able to meet with Professor Donati, Dr. Giulia Ligabue and HD Nurse Enmanuel. The group attended a train the trainer session where we discussed the contents of the sustainable kidney care course and the best approaches to engage colleagues in the topic and spread the word.

There was also the opportunity to discuss the work the hospital is already doing to become more sustainable and identify optimisations they could pilot to add to this, using the whiteboard to plan the next steps.Lucy smiles in front of a presentation screen which states Health Co-benefits of Climate ActionHattie stands facing a whiteboard which has a hand drawn mapping diagram drawn on it

After the workshop we were joined by Sofia and Cesar from ICONS who travelled from Milan to meet with us and visit the site. ICONS are a partner in the KitNewCare consortium, working on communication and dissemination. We all had a tour of the hospital and were able to see where patients visit for dialysis and transplants as well as the research and storage areas.

Sofia, Cesar and Lucy had time to catch up on everything communication, dissemination and education.

There was even some showbiz with Lucy and Dr.Ligabue interviewed for a KitNewCare video.

On the following day of our trip Dr.Ligabue kindly spent time with us so we could learn more about the unit. She was able to give Aycan an insight into procurement, finances and outcome measures and discuss the progress of the life cycle assessments that the work package 5 team are currently supporting with. We were also able to discuss in more detail the local project team in place and any support they may need with work package 3.

Resident Nephrology Doctor, Giuseppe Di Chiaro attended a training session, covering the train the trainer course. It was great to see how enthusiastic about sustainability the team are at UNIMORE.

Big thank you to the team at UNIMORE who were so welcoming and engaged throughout our trip. Also, to the ICONS team who took time out of their busy schedule to meet with us. Next up for the summer tour is Madrid!
