Possible Green Nephrology Fellowship opportunity 2013-16

The Centre for Sustainable Healthcare may soon be appointing to a new Green Nephrology Fellowship, linked to “a highly visible demonstration project showcasing radical redesign of a clinical service to deliver sustainable patient-centred care”.

The Fellowship is likely to be in place from August 2013, running for 2-3 years, and will be open to specialist trainees in renal medicine as an out-of-programme experience.  The Fellow would work closely with the Reading renal unit to engage patients, commissioners and primary care colleagues across Berkshire in designing and implementing a new, sustainable model of kidney care. As part of the role, they would be expected to pursue an MD or PhD at Warwick University, researching and developing evaluation tools to measure the environmental, social and financial impacts of alternative models of care.

Because the Oxford Academic Health Science Network (which would be funding the post) will not formally come into existance until April, we are not able to advertise until then.  But we are keen to let renal trainees know in advance that this opportunity may well be coming up.

If anyone would like to know more, please contact CSH.

I was lucky enough to be the Green Nephrology Fellow between 2009-2010. It was a fantastic year and I would strongly encourage renal trainees to consider applying for this new post. Working closely with the teams at the Centre for Sustainable Healthcare and Warwick University, I was able to achieve the more conventional requirements of OOPE, such as publishing original research papers in renal journals and obtaining an MD. But the post was about far more than this and gave me the opportunities to work within a rapidly developing and vital field of medicine (sustainable healthcare) and to forge links with people from the many different aspects of renal healthcare (clinicians, patients, managers, industry members, academics, policy makers...) I'm sure that, like me, the next Fellow would be supported in developing their project management skills and qualifications. I'd be happy to discuss my experiences further if anyone's interested...
