Hi. Do any Trusts allow in-patient phlebotomy to take bloods without aprons on? I'm working with a team whose SOP states they must wear aprons for all in-patient and they are struggling to get it changed. They feel the potential for contamination is highly unlikely (not occurred in several years). It would be great if we could share other Trusts SOP's (or just general practice) with the IPC team.

Hi Debs yes we do! Gloves and aprons don’t automatically go together - as part of Gloves Off campaign we did Aprons Off too. Happy to share our PPE SOP and aide memoire for staff if you email me holly.slyne2@nhs.net
Good spot - this sounds like something that you could make a positive change with!
I don't think there is any evidence to suggest that aprons provide benefit for phlebotomy.
Our phlebotomists don't use aprons. Do please drop me a message if you'd like me to share any further information, or try to find the policy.
