Request for help - medicines reuse

Dear Pharmacy Network,

I'm really looking for links to pharmacy networks in the USA - and would be super grateful if you might be able to introduce me to anyone you know who might be able to help me, for my research on re-use of dispensed medicines.  I've included my 'introduction and 'ask'' of these USA pharmacists below.

 Many thanks in advance,

Sarah

My name is Sarah – I’m a pharmacist in the UK. My background is in hospital and hospice work, alongside academia. I’m now entirely academic at Huddersfield University, teaching on our pharmacy degree course, and attempting to to study for a PhD.

My research is about re-using medicines which have been dispensed for one patient but not used; for a different patient. I’m aware that this is legal in some parts of the USA  ( State Prescription Drug Repository Programs (ncsl.org) ) – but it is currently not allowed in the UK– which leads to a lot of waste – my research is primarily about improving environmental sustainability in healthcare.  I’m planning to look at care homes/facilities initially.

I’m hoping to interview pharmacists in the USA – particularly those who might be involved in some level of reusing patient own drugs which have been returned.

It appears medicines might be able to be donated via national organisations (e.g. SIRUM Community Partners - SIRUM - Saving Medicine : Saving Lives), or smaller, more local organisations.

I am interested in how this works in all parts of the USA, but am particularly wanting to make links into states where I am aware that there are re-use schemes running – e.g.  Iowa, Georgia, Illinois, California, Tennessee, Colorado, Minnesota, New Hampshire, and/or Ohio.

Do you know if there is anyone who might be able to help me make connections with pharmacists who are engaged in these schemes?

Many thanks

Sarah
