The first EPA was set up by President Richard Nixon in response to growing concerns about air and water quality in the United States - an issue first highlighted by the scientist and breast cancer patient Rachel Carson, author of Silent Spring. The impact of this was profound- while the US population grew by 105 million and the economy tripled US emissions of the most common emissions fell by 71%. This significant achievement has been threatened by the roll backs made by the Trump administration on these environmental guard rails which have legacy impacts on cancer incidence in the US and climate change globally. I am a member of OUCH ( www.ouchforclimate.org ) an international organisation of Oncology Advocates United for Climate and Health . Our group wrote a article in JCO Global Oncology which I've attached here along with a paper outlining the impact of Rachel Carson's work on cancer care today. The EPA paper highlights the role of these agencies in cancer control and how we need them to have strong and secure mandates at this time. Please consider joining OUCH and add you voice and insights to a global advocacy group
I have added pdf's of the papers above in the link below
