Sharps Disposal

Dear All, to help reduce waste I would like to extend our present 12 week disposal of sharp receptacles when less than 3/4's full. To help support this it would be good to know what others are doing to help support this reduction in waste and costs.  I would like to implement disposal only when 3/4 full opposed to a timeframe of use. I have struggled when completing a comprehensive research of any guidance in relation to date of disposal. Please could you share with me what your present process is.

Hi Terri,
Thanks for sharing the question about sharps bins. I'm not involved in disposal at my trust but this is a really good question and I'll see if i can ask the waste manager. I also think there was some discussion of this by IPS, so I'll have a look to see if i can find any record or who was involved and see if they can get back to you.

Hi again,
Our waste managers got back to me. They said that there used to be a requirement to lock off sharps boxes at 12 weeks, but this was removed during the last review of the waste policy at the start of the year because there was a lack of evidence for it. Some other Trusts in our region have a similar approach- they are to be locked off when approaching the full line or blocked. Also, staff can lock a box off at any point if they deem necessary (smell, dirty, no longer required, etc.).
If you want to be in touch directly, I can put you in touch by email.
Thanks!
Best wishes,
Sarah
